LOTO Implementation

Locks and tags are not a LOTO program.

Most sites already own padlocks and danger tags. What’s usually missing is the policy, the procedure and the training behind them — the part that actually prevents the accident.

The Gap

It’s not the lock that fails. It’s what’s missing around it.

An accident doesn’t happen because a plant has too few padlocks. It happens because energy was never properly identified, isolated or accounted for before someone put their hands on the machine.

No equipment-specific procedure

fact_check

A generic checklist doesn’t know your machine. Every piece of equipment needs its own documented isolation steps.

Unclear authorization

badge

Who can isolate, who’s affected, who’s accountable — without defined roles, a lock is just decoration.

No audit trail

event_repeat

A program that’s never inspected quietly drifts out of compliance, one skipped shift change at a time.

Electrical energy is only one part of the problem.

Electrical energy Hydraulic pressure Pneumatic pressure Gravity Steam Heat Stored mechanical energy Residual energy

The question is not whether a machine has been switched off.

The question is whether every hazardous energy source has been identified, isolated, locked and verified.

By the Numbers

2,100+ deaths from machinery & electricity in India, 2014–2023

1,231 involving powered machinery and 885 from electricity, plus more than 11,000 non-fatal injuries — the hazardous energy LOTO exists to control.

120 fatalities, 50,000 injuries prevented every year in the U.S.

OSHA’s estimate for proper lockout/tagout compliance, with around 3 million U.S. workers exposed while servicing equipment.

What BRIGS Helps You Achieve

Five outcomes, not just five steps.

Five connected steps, numbered 01 to 05, each paired with equipment, lockout and audit photography

1. Identify

Know every energy source associated with the equipment.

2. Control

Establish appropriate isolation and lockout methods.

3. Verify

Make sure zero-energy conditions can actually be established and verified.

4. Standardise

Build consistent LOTO practices across equipment, departments and sites.

5. Sustain

Keep procedures aligned as equipment and processes change.

The BRIGS LOTO Program

One program, from policy to permit.

We don’t just supply locks. BRIGS builds and runs the hazardous-energy-control program for your site, aligned to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147.

01

Walkthrough & gap assessment

We map every machine, every energy source and every existing isolation point — and show you exactly where the gaps are.

02

Corporate LOTO policy

A written policy aligned to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, with roles defined for management, authorized and affected employees.

03

Zero energy assessment

Every machine assessed on its own, so nothing gets isolated by guesswork.

04

Equipment-specific procedures

A documented LOTO procedure (ESLP) for every machine on your floor — not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

05

Role-based training

Authorized employees, affected employees and management each trained for exactly what their role requires.

06

Devices, audit & certification

Locks, tags and station signage installed, then inspected on a schedule — with a compliance rating for your site.

The problem with LOTO procedures

Written to be filed. Not to be followed.

Most sites have LOTO procedures somewhere. But they don’t reach the person isolating the machine, at the moment they have to. Three things get in the way.

subject

Text-heavy and hard to follow

Isolation steps buried in dense text are difficult for workers to comprehend, when every step has to be done, and in the right order.

account_tree

A complex way to produce one

Someone documents the steps. They go to a design or CAD team to make them look good. Then they are printed. A long chain, and every machine needs its own procedure.

The biggest problem
folder_off

Stored in the office, not on the floor

The procedure sits in a file or folder in the office. At the machine, when someone has to isolate it, it simply isn’t there.

The solution

Make the LOTO procedure visual.

Image-based, not text-heavy. The SOP module renders every LOTO procedure beautifully, to your company’s template, with the real machine, its isolation points and its devices shown as pictures that workers understand at a glance.

LOTO with the SOP module

Equipment-specific procedures, made easy.

Writing a procedure for every machine is the hardest part of a LOTO program. The BRIGS SOP module is built for LOTO: hazards, locking devices, the method of application and the method of verification are all built in, so each equipment-specific procedure comes together step by step.

The same procedure becomes the printed sheet that sticks on the machine, and the step-by-step task people follow to isolate it, with proof of execution entered for approval.

format_list_numbered

Generate it step by step

Build the procedure in the SOP builder, with photos of the actual machine. The LOTO elements are already there to pick from, so nobody starts from a blank page.

print

Print it. Stick it on the machine.

The approved procedure is rendered into a clean, printable LOTO sheet, ready to display at the machine it belongs to.

add_task

Execute it and prove it

The same procedure opens as a step-by-step task for LOTO execution on a mobile device or tablet. Proof of execution is entered against the steps and goes for approval.

What “Done” Looks Like

Everything in place. Working as one system.

Policy, assessment, procedure, training, devices and audit — a LOTO-compliant site treats these as one connected program, not eight separate checkboxes.

An ideal LOTO-compliant site: corporate policy, zero energy assessment, ESLP for every machine, defined roles, devices and signage, training and retraining, scheduled audits, and visual workplace integration
The BRIGS Standard

One framework. One standard. One point of responsibility.
